The Problem(s)

A Guest essay from my friend David Wagner

The Problem(s)

In 2015 when Trump first came down the escalator, so many concerns were voiced by
so many of us across the spectrum of political thought. Regrettably more than a few of those concerns have come to or are coming to fruition

My biggest concern voiced at the time was his potential power, if he were to be elected president, to nominate/appoint people to the Supreme Court, our highest and last haven of refuge and resort, people who were either unqualified, lacked empathy and basic human kindness, who were beyond the normal bond of precedent and rational thinking or with a strong and personal agenda inconsistent with the underlying values and principles of the America as most of us have come to know, love, cherish and depend upon.

My concern revolved around two main pieces or threads. First the court plays one of the most critically important roles as a co-equal branch of government in protecting our democracy by interpreting the law and being a check on the overreach of the other branches, legislative and executive from running amok. My second major concern was the fact that an appointment to the court of a younger person, the wrong person(s)could and would seriously mess things up for decades. Not just an election cycle of 2 years or 4 years. An election which can be reversed by voting out a sitting congressman, Senator or even a president. A Supreme Court Justice can serve literally for decades. Justice, William Douglas served (for good) for over 36 Years. An entire generation could be negatively affected by Trump court appointees.

Just a short list version of the many concerns I have that are currently keeping me up at night.

Ukraine War
Gaza
The Supreme Court
Iran
Tariffs
The Supreme Court
Voting Rights
Executive order number……..
The Supreme Court
Deportation of legal and nonviolent and noncriminal immigrants

The Big Beautiful Budget that steals from the poor and gives to the rich

The Supreme Court

The Big beautiful budget that takes away food from children here and around the world.
The Supreme Court
Overturning of Roe versus Wade
The Supreme Court
Attempt to cancel birthright citizenship enshrined in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution
The Supreme Court
Disturbing the right of district courts ability to protect the people from unconstitutional actions or laws.
The Supreme Court
Making lying acceptable behavior
Vicious and unwarranted personal attacks on the fourth estate, the Press
The Supreme Court
A Serial sex offender as President
The Supreme Court
A Convicted felon as President
Granting almost total immunity to a president, making him in effect the king
The Supreme Court
Ending of medical and food support to the world through USAid
The Supreme Court

You will notice in this lengthy but not nearly exhaustive list of concerns I have mentioned the Supreme Court over and over as a critical and crucial issue because they are supposed to be the defenders and protectors of the constitution and our democracy. I believe strongly that they are not currently properly doing their job.

Like Congress, the Court seems to have surrendered all power to one individual, to one man.
We do not have kings.
We should not have a king.

These are most difficult and dangerous times for our country and our place in the world.

Do something.
Do whatever you can.
Help save this country and sustain our democracy.

May peace break out throughout our country and in the whole world in our time.
